  • The TED TALK TED 主讲人分享模式;
  • The Group 团队模式;
  • The Studio 工作室模式;
  • The Camp Fire 野营篝火模式;
  • The Cave 洞穴模式;
  • The Mountain Top

15

Learning Styles

We all know:“Tell me, and I will forget. Show me and I may remember. Involve me, and I will understand.”

Learning Modalities

Brain research has helped us understand about the different learning styles of individuals –

  • listen and watch 听和看
  • hands on learning 触碰学习
  • working in groups 团队合作

But unless your class is made up of 5 year olds our rectangular, 75 sq meter classrooms with 22 kids (if you are lucky!) filled with desks and chairs – and maybe a bit of space for a carpet circle and a sofa, don’t give a lot of scope for lots of different modalities of learning.

Lets try and describe some of them, and think of the spaces and furniture and numbers of people that.

◈Introduction

1

Environments for Learning: Intro

Environment impacts on all of us – whether it is

  • physical
  • social
  • the energy in the room

◈Physical Space That Make You Feel Alive

2

Physical Spaces that make you feel alive

Whether they are:

  •  Manmade
  •  Natural
  •  Or Cultural

3

There are special places where we like to

  • Eat
  • Discuss
  • Work alone

We eat to nourish our bodies, enjoy time with friends and nourish our souls

Learning is the food for our brain – and it is impacted by all our senses

Eating in a cell is only food

In this day of plenty – Going to a food court, restaurant, a terrace or café is a total life experience less about eating and more about relaxing to enjoy the food, spendingtime and conversation with friends, or quietly catching up on reading, messages or social media.

The environment for eating is like the appetizer that helps us to get ready to enjoy our dining experience – the food, the environment, the service, and good company.

4

Yet despite more than 100 years of psychologists and educators promoting change – we mostly keep serving up the same learning menus, in the same 19th century bells and cells factory learning environments.

And yet today – we are in the era of unprecedented change and technological disruption.

Change Comes Slowly – Can we afford to wait?

The world of life and work is changing – quickly

But schools are changing – slowly, can’t afford, or become irrelevant

Changing learning requires new approaches to learning – what is important

And changing how we think about where learning takes place.

◈Thinking Schools as Communities

5

Terms like “collaborative learning community” or “community of learners” abound in our school descriptors and mission statements. But do we really see our schools as communities – that welcome parents and friends, where people would just want to hang out, where kids wanted to hang out, rather than getting out of as soon as the last bell rings?

In medieval days, people got together on the village green – to socialize and exchange goods. Every time I visit Europe I, like thousands of others, just seem to love to hang out in a village square or piazza.

Where are our village greens or piazzas in 2016- our parks? Or the shopping mall? Coffee shop or Fitness Center

Can you identify a village green in your school? Is it used by everyone in your community?

Here are some that I’ve helped to create – and they continue to be loved and to help frame the identity of their communities.

And they help kids, staffand parents and all combinations of the above to –

  •  Connect informally
  •  Meet up formally (in public!)
  •  Develop social cohesion
  •  Communicate
  •  Relax, hang out

◈Learning Spaces

11

Revisit Prime Real Estate

We would all say – we don’t have room

But have we thought about some of the biggest and most expensive real estate in our schools that are hardly used

    •  Cafeterias
    •  Theater
    •  Libraries

We need to think about all spaces in schools as spaces for learning, and renovate spaces, win back wasted spaces and give them back to real learning, and to people

As teachers we need to think less of turf and our little empires that we can decorat and control – and remind ourselves that with today’s technology learning can occur any where, and that we as teachers can pretty well teach anywhere.

Life in the tech era, is redefining the learning that is really important for the future, how we interact with each other, how we like to learn and where and when we can do things.

12

Making the best of a classroom space – variety and versatility

Don’t make them all the same – share different spaces for different functions across a couple of classrooms or a grade level community.

Make them as multi-functional and flexible as possible

Writeable spaces – desks, walls, windows

Tables and chairs of different shapes and heights – chairs, swivels, stools, standing, even long boards and balls!

Display, display, display

Technology – big screens, small screens, small group screens – flexible locations

Sofas and rugs and work/resource stations

Ask yourself where is the front of the room? Does there need to be a front?

◈Release your Interior Decorator!

17

Since the days when humans lived in caves – we have liked to decorate!

We spend a lot of time, effort and money to decorate our homes to make them nice– but apart from sleep time, many of us only spend around 5-6 hours of waking timein our homes, and around the same at school but spend very little on décor, or redecorating.

Hotels and shopping malls refurbish at least once every 5-7 years. But in most schools, we keep our furniture for 20 -30 years, paint walls with offwhite or grey, keep a couple of half dead pot plants and a few display boards (or digital display boards) and that’s about it.

Add color, add shape, non standard furniture, sofas, stools, rugs, no furniture…..
